//Policy & Advocacy
The British Obesity Society plays an active role in supporting national efforts to improve the prevention, understanding, and management of obesity. Through policy engagement, consultation responses, parliamentary involvement, and expert representation, we contribute to shaping the conversation around obesity and public health in the UK.

Contributing to National Guidance and Consultation
Since its establishment, the British Obesity Society has contributed expert insight to national consultations on obesity, nutrition, and public health.
Through its founder, Jane DeVille-Almond, the Society provided stakeholder input into consultations linked to the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN), including discussions on energy balance, obesity, and prevention. These consultations inform national recommendations used by government, healthcare services, and public health bodies.
Members of the Society have also contributed to consultations informing NICE guidance and wider government strategies on overweight and obesity, ensuring that clinical experience, public health expertise, and lived experience perspectives are represented.

Parliamentary Engagement
The British Obesity Society has engaged with All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs), providing expertise and contributing to discussions that inform national policy.
This includes involvement with APPGs focused on:
-
Obesity
-
School Food
-
Women’s Health
-
A Fit and Healthy Childhood
-
Nutrition and Public Health
These groups bring together parliamentarians, clinicians, charities, and researchers to explore solutions and make recommendations to government. Our involvement helps ensure obesity is recognised as a serious and complex public health issue requiring evidence-based and compassionate approaches.

Supporting Public Health Policy
The Society has supported national discussions on key public health initiatives, including:
-
Obesity prevention strategies
-
Food policy and nutrition labelling
-
Weight management services
-
Public awareness and education
We advocate for policies that improve access to appropriate support, reduce stigma, and promote long-term, sustainable health outcomes.

Providing Expert Voice in Media and Public Discourse
The British Obesity Society regularly contributes to national media, conferences, and public events, helping to raise awareness and provide balanced, evidence-based perspectives on obesity.
This includes television appearances, conference presentations, and participation in national awareness campaigns.
Our Ongoing Commitment
Obesity is one of the most significant public health challenges facing the UK. The British Obesity Society remains committed to contributing to policy discussions, supporting education, and working alongside healthcare professionals, policymakers, and partner organisations to improve outcomes for individuals and communities.
